OUR STORY

WYANGA ABORIGINAL AGED CARE

The core of the spirit of Aboriginal people is Mother Earth and it is within this spirit that Wyanga Aboriginal Aged Care Program. It is this connection that drives the Wyanga Aboriginal Aged Care Program to deliver real and meaningful services to Elders in the Redfern, Inner West and Eastern Suburbs areas. We respectfully acknowledge the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which we stand.

Founded in 1996 by Sylvia Scott (nee Ingram), a Wiradjuri Elder from Cowra (NSW), Wyanga was born from her incredible legacy as a staunchly driven advocate for the rights of Aboriginal people. Aunty Sylvia’s vision was clear: to improve access to care and support for Elders in the community while ensuring that services were delivered by trained Aboriginal staff, dedicated to upholding the highest standards of aged care to our Elders.

Together with fellow founding board members Aunty Olive Campbell, Aunty Millie Ingram and Aunty Norma Ingram, Wyanga was built from the ground up by these incredible matriarchs and has been successfully providing critical homecare services to Elders in their own homes.

The foundation of Wyanga is built upon the invaluable contributions of Elders, whose wisdom and strength continue to shape and guide our work.

In 1996, after much advocacy Wyanga received ten Home Care Packages from the Commonwealth Government, marking the beginning of its journey. In December 1999, Wyanga became an autonomous, community-controlled organisation. The turning point for Wyanga came in 2005, when the Indigenous Land Corporation purchased and fully renovated an old plumbing shop, transforming it into a modern facility that now caters to the needs of both Wyanga’s staff and Elders.

Beyond in-home care, Wyanga offers a diverse range of activities that promote the well-being and spirits of our Elders and the wider community. Our vision is simple yet powerful: "To strive for excellence and best practice in the provision of culturally appropriate services and quality care for our Elders in their homes and within the community."

This vision has driven us since 1996 and continues to inspire our work today.
